3 Things You Didn’t Know About Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus

It’s almost Halloween, and that means it’s almost time to revisit the greatest film of all time. Citizen Kane? No thanks. We’ll watch Hocus Pocus! Here are 3 things you probably didn’t know about the Halloween cult classic

Sarah Jessica Parker’s Shocking Past

In the movie, Sarah Jessica Parker’s character is a witch who narrowly escaped being hanged during the Salem Witch Trials. It turns out that her real-life ancestor went through the same thing! Esther Elwell was accused of witchcraft during the 1600s but managed to get out of Salem alive.

It Could Have Been Really Different

Originally, the part of Max Dennison was offered to Leonardo DiCaprio. The future Oscar winner turned it down for a role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape alongside Johnny Depp instead. The part went to Omri Katz, who has since left the acting world.

Mary Sanderson was almost played by Rosie O’Donnell, but the filmmakers ended up going with Kathy Najimy instead. It’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role, but early 90s Rosie was pretty darn funny. She claims she turned down the role because she didn’t want to play a scary witch.

One more mindblower: A young Jennifer Lopez auditioned for the role that ended up going to Sarah Jessica Parker!

The Best Actor You’ve Never Seen

The creepy zombie Billy Butcherson was played by Doug Jones. And although you might not know it, you’ve probably seen him in a ton of stuff. Jones is best known for his incredible performances while wearing heavy makeup and prostheses. He played the lead member of the terrifying Gentlemen on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films. Most recently, you didn’t recognize him as the monster in The Shape of Water.

Also, remember when those moths flew out of his mouth? Yeah, those were real. Jones is a dedicated artist.
