Future of Superman and Batman Is Up in the Air

Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck may be hanging up their capes for good. Reports surfaced earlier today that Cavill was definitely leaving the DC Universe, but updated statements from Warner Bros. as well as Cavill’s agent have cast doubt over the earlier reports.

Superman v. Lackluster Reviews

The 35-year-old British actor first appeared as Superman in Man of Steel, an outing that was met with mixed reviews. The 2016 follow-up Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was not well received by critics or fans, and although Justice League fared better, the DC movies always seem to lag behind the massive popularity of Marvel.

Is He or Isn’t He?

It seems that a cameo appearance in the upcoming Shazam! movie may have caused Cavill to walk away from the red and blue spandex for good. Talks apparently broke down between Cavill’s camp and the studio regarding his minor role in the John Krasinski-led action-comedy.

Immediately after the rumors started swirling, Cavill’s agent Dany Garcia Tweeted “The cape is still in his closet.” Meanwhile, the studio issued this statement: “While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.”

Sounds like things could go either way, doesn’t it?

Affleck Out, Supergirl In?

Ben Affleck is also reportedly leaving the DC Universe. The troubled actor is currently in rehab for alcohol addiction. With the potential for 2 of the main Justice League actors to head out the door, it’s possible that a reboot of the franchise is on the horizon. So far, Wonder Woman has been the only unqualified success in the whole DC universe.

More rumors are swirling that Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan might step into the role of Superman instead. In the meantime, the studio is putting all its weight behind the upcoming Supergirl film, perhaps hoping to find the same success as the female-led Wonder Woman.
