If you’re like most of us, you loved Chris Evans as Captain America. He took on a role that could easily have been a boring goody two-shoes in another actor’s hands. Instead, he played Cap with dignity, strength, and honesty. And now, it seems, he’s hanging up his shield for good.
Cryptic Twitter Message
Earlier in October, Chris Evans took to Twitter, where he gave a heartfelt thank you to everyone who had been part of the Marvel family. He had just finished filming Avengers 4, and it seems he was feeling pretty verklempt about it!
“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least,” Chris wrote. “Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”
So does that mean Chris is officially done with Cap?
End of an Era
It’s no secret that the contracts for the original Avengers are up. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Hemsworth are likely to be retiring from their superhero roles. Maybe they’ll renew. Maybe they won’t. But it certainly sounds like Chris Evans is done, doesn’t it? And after that cliffhanger ending to Infinity War, it’s not clear where the future of the MCU is headed.
More Chris, Please
Thankfully, we at least know where Chris Evans is headed. The actor just signed on to star opposite Daniel Craig in a murder mystery called Knives Out from Star Wars director Rian Johnson. After that, the once-and-always Captain America has said several times in interviews that he’d like to direct. He made his directorial debut with the romantic drama Before We Go in 2014, but his Marvel duties have kept him just a little bit busy in the meantime.
