A Spice Girls Reunion Is Happening… Sort Of

The Spice Girls hold a special place in our pop-culture-loving hearts. Their songs were catchy, their attitude refreshing, and their movie was surprisingly funny and self-aware.

Ever since the band went their separate ways, we’ve been hoping to see them on stage again. And now a Spice Girls reunion is in the works—minus one key member.

Friendship Never Ends?

It’s no surprise that Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham has declined to join her former band mates. Posh has her hands full with a fashion line and her family with David Beckham. However, she wanted to make it clear that there was no bad blood:

“Being in the Spice Girls was a hugely important part of my life, and I wish my girls so much love and fun as they go back on tour… I know they will put on an amazing show and the fantastic fans past and present are going to have a wonderful time!”

Girl Power Grows Up

Despite Posh’s decision to sit this one out, the tour will go on. Baby, Scary, Sporty, and Ginger made a joint announcement on Twitter about their 2019 tour. They’ll be playing 6 dates in the UK, and you can expect tickets to sell out pretty much immediately.

We haven’t seen the Spice Girls all together since the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, when they made a surprise appearance during the closing ceremonies. They played medley of their greatest hits—and looked fantastic doing it.

Will They Ever Get Back Together?

The last official tour with all five Spice Girls happened in 2008, shortly after their greatest hits CD was released. In February of 2018, it seemed like the girls were seriously considering a reunion when they met at Geri Halliwell’s London townhouse for a meeting. At the time, they released a joint statement that they all wanted to do something:

“The time now feels right to explore some incredible new opportunities together. We all agree that there are many exciting possibilities that will once again embrace the original essence of the Spice Girls, while reinforcing our message of female empowerment for future generations.”

Days after that statement came out, however, Posh fired back “I’m not going on tour. The girls aren’t going on tour.”

It sounds like Posh was interested in some kind of Spice Girl reunion, but not one that involved leaving her fashion line and family behind while she goes on tour. It doesn’t seem like she’ll change her mind, but there’s still a chance that a joint project featuring all five of the original Spice Girls might happen someday.
