First, there was Cinderella. Then we had Beauty and the Beast. And soon we’ll be getting The Lion King! Disney just dropped the trailer for the new hyper-realistic remake of the iconic animated film–and we are shook!
The New King
Be honest, did you get chills when you heard James Earl Jones deliver his speech to young Simba? Jones is back as the voice of Musfasa, the brave and wise leader of his pride.
“Everything the light touches is our kingdom. But, a king’s time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day, the sun will set on my time here, and will rise with you as the new king.”
Chills, I tell you!
Meet the All-Star Cast
Joining James Earl Jones is an all-new cast of actors. The lions are all voiced by black actors—Donald Glover is Simba, Chiweetel Ejiofor is Scar, and THE Beyonce is Nala! Oh, and the legendary Alfre Woodard will be stepping in to voice Simba’s fierce mama, Sarabi. Comedian Keegan-Michael Key voices Kamari, a new hyena character that presumably replaces one or more of the original hyena pack from the animated movie.
Rounding out the cast, we have Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner as Pumbaa and Timon. Let me just say, I’m dying to hear those two hanging out as the loveable weirdoes who raise Simba. Finally, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver will be taking over the role of Zazu. The hornbill advisor to the lion kings was originally played by Rowan Atkinson.
Is It Animated or Live Action?
We still don’t quite know what to call a movie like The Lion King redux or the new version of The Jungle Book. Both movies are directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and blend real scenery with realistic 3-D computer animation. Leave it to Disney to invent a new type of movie. They did it with Snow White, and it looks like they’re doing it again now.
We’ll have to wait until July of 2019 to see The Lion King in theaters. Until then, we’ll have to take Mufasa’s advice and “remember” the 1994 classic.
