Emma Thompson received a major honor this week. And she did it with her trademark cheek. Not only did she wear sneakers to Buckingham Palace—but she saucily asked Prince William to give her a kiss!
What a Dame!
Emma was named a Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her work as an actress.“I’ve become much more commanding since it happened,” Emma quipped to Seth Meyers in September, shortly after she learned about the honor.
“I’ve also had every seat I sit on just made slightly taller. It’s subtle, so people are lifting their heads slightly more toward me than they did before, but they’re not quite sure why,” she joked.
No Heels for Emma
The actress strolled into Buckingham Palace wearing a smart blue Stella McCartney suit and bright white sneakers. Emma made it clear at the 2014 Golden Globes that she has no patience for uncomfortable footwear. She chucked her Louboutins over her shoulder onstage and presented her award barefoot!
Her hair—which has gone gloriously white—was swept back from her face, and she wore a red poppy on her lapel in honor of UK veterans. Although her dress was unconventional, she didn’t exactly break royal protocol. Except for what she said to Prince William!
It Was Only a Kiss…
When Prince William presented Emma with her MBE, she jokingly asked him for a kiss.
“I love Prince William, I’ve known him since he was little, and we just sniggered at each other,” Emma said after the ceremony. She has been friends with his dad—you know, Prince Charles—for decades. “I said, ‘I can’t kiss you, can I?’ And he said, ‘No don’t!'”
According to Emma, the prince didn’t want to pull focus on her special day by snogging in Buckingham Palace. “He said, ‘This day isn’t about me, it’s about you.’”
Emma’s family beamed with pride in photos from the Palace. Her husband of 15 years, fellow actor Greg Wise, was there to support his wife. (You might remember him as the rakish Willoughby from Sense and Sensibility!) They were joined by their daughter, Gaia, who looked lovely in a blush pink tea dress.
The couple’s adopted son, Tindyebwa, is a former Rwandan child soldier who met Emma when he was a 16-year-old refugee. She took him under her wing, and he quickly became part of their family. Apparently, he had no idea his Mum was a famous actress until his English teacher played a DVD of Henry V in class!
As with everything else in her life, Emma’s family is a little bit unconventional. But there’s no doubt that they adore each other.
Congratulations to Dame Emma Thompson—but maybe don’t try to kiss any more royals, okay?
